July 4th Ventura Street Fair

The City of Ventura is holding it's annual 4th of July Street Fair downtown on Main Street. The Oak Street portion will feature the Sierra Club's theme: Save the World for Kids and “Green” Your Home.
 
Kid projects to be displayed are: 

Kids vs Global Warming - A Declaration of Independence from Coal and Oil will be available for all youth to sign.  Hands-on demonstrations, a carnival-type game and easy to understand global warming information as well as personal pledges kids can make to be part of the growing movement of youth environmentalists.
SLAP (Sea Level Awareness Project) shows where the water level will be in Ventura if global warming continues. Get involved to prevent it from happening.
California Solar Electric is powering our sound stage. They have a truck for kids to learn about solar power.
Bike generating power station to light up light bulbs and travel lesson to plop oranges in a water barrel – fun, fun, fun!
Stage events with music, poetry, theatre, (very) short talks about global warming interspered with the plastic bagboy touting the “wonders” of plastic bags. You can “boo” him down and get a prize for telling a better way to carry things. 
City of Ventura Recycling game - Spin the wheel and the correct answer gets a prize! 
Boys and Girls Clubs of Oxnard/El Rio day campers will tell us how they protect the world for the future.
Bicycle rodeo - skills course to teach riding and safety skills to kids who bring their bike and a helmet.

“Green the Home” section for parents will include:

California Solar Electric tells how to generate your own electricity.
Nature by Design shows how to save water and have a sustainable garden for this climate.
Daylite Company shows us how to save electricity using natural light, cheaply!
The Sierra Club will be providing Compact florescent light bulbs to those visitors who can answer some questions about how they can save more energy!
Bicycle valet parking will be provided at the "Bike Coral." All who bring their bikes to the Street Fair can park for free with security on Oak Street.

Volunteers Needed!
20 volunteers are needed to help with the street fair. Especially needed are Spanish speakers. If you can help or for more information, please contact Dorothy Littlejohn.
